Blog #34 – A New Money Perspective for 2023- Pause BEFORE Purchasing!

A New Money Perspective for 2023-  Pause BEFORE Purchasing!

We are all more aware of how we are spending our money in 2023. Inflation appears to be sticking around and that means everything is costing more…even those Uber rides!

I did a full analysis of my spending in 2022 and was shocked by how impulsive I’ve been about how I spend my hard-earned money. How often did I hit purchase without even thinking. How did little purchases here and there end up to be large monthly bills?

With my new plan in place now for two months, I’m learning that pausing actually lets me connect my intuition with my logical mind and that feels good.

Here is my spending plan for 2023!
  1. Clothing, Shoes and Accessories

Give me a sale and I’ve previously always been your gal. If a company sent me an email ad that includes the words “Last Chance. Pre-sale-sale, very few remaining, Friends and Family…” I was immediately searching the available inventory. The early bird gets the worm right? No more.

In 2023, I’m committed to being more creative with all the existing clothes in my closets AND I have limited myself to only purchasing ONE new item each month….that includes shoes, purses, scarves, gloves, coats, etc. Suddenly, that one purchase makes me want it to be very precious and special.

  1. Books

I have an addiction that I’ve convinced myself is self-improvement, even therapy and that no book is a bad investment. I’m expanding my mind! It is easy to minimize $15 here and $19.99 there until suddenly my monthly Amazon bill is in the hundreds of dollars. Kindle is even worse. There is no physical evidence of my addiction with Kindle, so it is easy to hide and pretend it is nothing much.

My new plan? Make a paper list of every book I haven’t read that is sitting on a shelf or inside my Kindle and make that my Reading List for 2023. Don’t open the Penguin emails of the books everyone is loving right now. Delete the Goodreads comments for a while.  Just let myself enjoy the books that I was intrigued by just a only few months ago.

  1. Monthly Recurring Charges

Most of these recurring charges are streaming channels that I thoroughly enjoyed at some point (especially during covid) or joined to watch a specific show. Their contracts do allow you to stop and start these channels and that is what I am going to do. HBO Max, Brit Box, Apple TV, Netflix, you name it. For 2023, I’m choosing only those that have programs I want to watch now rather than someday. I’m going to pay attention to what’s on my current subscription list and stop and start as desired.

  1. Programs that Market Growing My Business, Managing My Time, Losing the Weight

Oh my, I was a sucker for every great program in 2022 but no more. People like Amy Porterfield, Marie Forleo, Scott Osman, Gabby Bernstein and loads of others….have huge email lists and they make their money by constantly creating and selling programs to that email list that claim to they have the secret to accomplishing whatever it is I want in that moment. None of them work for me. I’m not disciplined enough for online independent learning, and I get very little out of chat boxes when there are 200 people on the calls. I need customization and individualization. This year I’m only investing in my business coach!

So, that’s my strategic plan for financial decisions in 2023. What about yours? What are you doing differently in 2023 that you haven’t done before? Let’s share…
