Blog #31- Highlighting Women Entrepreneurs
This week’s podcast discusses how women, especially those over 40, make great entrepreneurs.
Well, as a follow up, why not make yourself a cup of tea and let yourself dream of running your own business…from a book shop in England, to a cooking blog that resulted in a book, to an e-commerce women’s clothing shop. These movies are not really about entrepreneurial ventures but finding balance while pursuing our passions within the messiness of life.
The Book Shop (2017) 
Not an easy movie, and yet thought provoking. Florence Green, a widow, puts grief behind her and risks everything to open up a bookshop — the first such shop in a sleepy seaside town in England. But she encounters fierce opposition primarily from a Mrs. Gamart, the self-appointed leader of the town, who resents Florence’s strength and the disruption of her plans for an art center in the building that Florence purchased for her book shop. This movie is based on a book by Penelope Fitzgerald, and has a sad, and yet strangely uplifting ending. Maybe that describes some of our entrepreneurial journeys.
Book lovers will enjoy this movie, as well as lovers of the décor of English towns in times gone by. The difficult ending reminds us that there are so many ways we touch people, even when we struggle to find blessing inside our failures.

The Intern (2015)
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The trailer focuses on the title, the Intern, who is Ben Whittaker, a retired executive who takes on the role of intern. On a side not, how fun would that be? But the substory is really Jules Ostin, a young woman entrepreneur, who starts an online fashion store and successfully grows it but struggles to balance personal pressures in her marriage along with growth issues in a startup. You’ll get insight into the multi-tasking required of every entrepreneurial leader as well as the need for support, and a really good friend or mentor who will listen but provide honesty when needed.

Baby Boom (1987)
This movie is an oldie but goodie. Watching it again makes me remember my years as a stockbroker. It begins with J.C. Wiatt, a New York City businesswoman, who is married to her job. J.C.’s life takes an unexpected turn when a relative she hardly knows, suddenly dies and makes her the guardian of a baby girl. Soon, J.C.’s boyfriend moves out, and because she when she struggles to balance raising a child with her hectic schedule, she loses her high-profile job. A move to Vermont, a bunch of apple trees and suddenly, a business is born.

Julie and Julia (2009)
Frustrated with a soul-killing job, New Yorker Julie Powell (a true story) embarked on a daring project: Write a blog, The Julie/Julia Project, which documented her attempt to cook all 524 recipes in Julia Childs’ landmark cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking”. Intertwined with Julie’s story is the true tale of how Julia Child herself conquered French cuisine with passion, fearlessness, and a whole lot of butter. Tragically, Julie passed away at 49 years of age in 2022. This movie beautifully documents her passion for cooking and of course Julia Child.

Self-Made, Inspired by the Life of C.J. Walker (2020)
C.J. Walker began as a washerwoman who eventually took her ideas for hair care to the market, building an empire worth millions of dollars. A touching and yet historically insightful view into the times and life of a woman who not only kept her dream but relentlessly pursued it.
