Blog #27: Thinking of Starting a Podcast?
Start with your WHY
What is it that you want to talk about? What conversation topics are bursting to come out of you to the point that you want to head to Hyde Park Corner in London and share with anyone who is there.
Who is your target audience and what do you feel really needs to be shared?
I talk about women who are creating fabulous next chapters. I felt very strongly that there weren’t enough conversations about how to do that. What to do after a corporate resignation, the kids growing up, or possibly turning a hobby into a business. So that became my why.
How is a podcast different from a blog?
Having a podcast is so different from a blog. There is an intimacy with a podcast that just doesn’t happen in a blog. I find myself sharing bits of my life on my podcast that I would probably never write in a blog because it is more conversational. Some people are also better at expressing their thoughts orally rather than writing.
YouTube is filled with vlogs these days, which are actually more like reality tv shows that a true blog or podcast. Like everything, you have to try it out to see what you like best and get feedback from people you trust!
But I’m afraid no one will ever listen to my podcast!
Unless you are a celebrity, be okay with only good friends and maybe family listening in the beginning. Don’t pay attention to the downloads, just get comfortable talking. We all get better doing whatever it is we do through practice, so look at launching your podcast as a period of practice.
You’ll be practicing how to use the needed technology. You’ll be practicing creating content, probably starting with a script and as your confidence grows, you’ll be able to adlib more and more. The name of your podcast might even change. I started with Be The Real You because that was the first name of my magazine, which evolved into Extraordinary Women. You don’t have to be perfect to start!
How do I get guests? Do I even want guests?
In the beginning, if you are like me, you’re absolutely convinced no one would join you on a podcast. I was so tentative to ask, and got super nervous before each guest podcast. I had no idea how to manage a guest.
So for an entire year and a half, I did solo podcasts with me, myself and I talking to whoever listened. After a year or so, I added guests but I only asked people I really knew would say yes.

With time I’ve gotten braver and now have an ongoing list of women I’d love to interview.
You’ll also need a scheduling system for your guests- I happen to use Calendly and find it very easy to use, important because I’m not a techie.
How often should I podcast?
Ideal is weekly and I say that because every platform has an algorithm and weekly episodes hits all their buttons. Also, everyone likes routines, so your listeners will love knowing that every Tuesday for example, your new podcast arrives on the various podcast platforms.
How often you decide to podcast leads to content creation.
In the beginning I was hardly keeping up. I’d be recording sometimes days before it was to go live. Then I hired a podcast manager who demanded that I have at least two weeks of podcasts in the pipeline. I was actually scared of her, so I did it. Accountability is good! Before you launch, have at least three podcasts ready to go so that you aren’t panicking in those early weeks.
Podcasting platforms?
I learned the hard way. I started with Anchor, which was then a small platform that hadn’t been completely tested, but it was free. It was a nightmare, especially when I added a guest. Some days I’d have to record more than once because the recording was a mess. When I hired my first podcast manager, she got me onto Buzzsprout and I’ve been there ever since. When you are starting, you want surety, consistency so go with established names. Forget price shopping.
Video or Just Audio?
From the beginning I started with video recordings of my podcasts. I have no idea why. It’s not like I’m a young gorgeous woman but I had used Zoom for years in my career coaching business so I thought, why not. Podcast managers rarely will touch video- so for now my video podcasts are a bit of a mess over on YouTube. That said, Fivrr is a fabulous resource for any type of editing, so that’s a great place to start if you want video.
This is just a brief overview of podcasting if you are thinking of starting one, let’s talk about it over in the Extraordinary Women Facebook group. That is a great place to introduce your podcast, get suggestions and kind, supportive feedback!!
