Blog #20: Page Turners for Anglophiles!

Before I ever fell in love with Paris, I was an anglophile and frankly, I still am. What would Sunday nights be without the great British mysteries?

I have a comfort level with Britain that I may never have with France. It might be the language, but I also think as Americans, we view ourselves as sharing with Great Britain, the commonality of foods, architecture, writers, clothing, and even laws. And even though there would be no America without the financial and military support of France, and we were fighting the Brits … we seem more than a bit obsessed with the royal family, Downton Abbey, and British gardens!

Some of my favorite books and please do share yours!

Jacqueline WinspeaMaisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear. This is a series of 17 books that will captivate you. The author is originally from the UK and now lives in California. It starts with Maisie as a young servant girl whose employer discovers her keen intelligence and becomes her mentor and much more as the series develops.

There are mysteries of course, this is British writing, but so many bits of wisdom shared in each book that will have you thinking how it relates to your own life. The author even wrote a follow-up to the beautiful series titled What Would Maisie Do? Beautiful writing, intriguing mysteries, a view into the two world wars, and insight into the life of a woman breaking barriers in her career and personal life choices. Plan to be consumed.

London and Sarum by Edward Rutherford. Edward   Rutherford is a masterful historical fiction writer. His first book, Sarum starts in the prehistoric times around Salisbury, England and follows five families though history. London continues the fabulous journey.

The stories of the fictional families intwined with the historical facts of the time, will leave you immersed in these books. I first read Sarum when my daughter was quite young, I would rise an hour earlier each morning, just so I had the pleasure of reading these books with a cup of tea before my day began. The author is also a transplanted Brit, who now lives in the USA.

The Paying Guest by Sarah Waters. I haven’t started this book yet, but soon…although it might only be daytime reading. The book is set in 1922 London, with the widow Mrs. Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances open their home to paying ex-servicemen. With the arrival of Lilian and Leonard Barber, life in what was once a quiet house, profoundly changes.

Short-listed for the Man Booker Prize three times, Sarah Waters has earned a reputation as one of our greatest writers of historical fiction. Described as a love story, a tension-filled crime story, and a beautifully atmospheric portrait of a fascinating time and place, I can’t wait.

At Home in the Cotswolds: Secrets of English Country Style by Katy Campbell and Mark Nicolson. I have spent a good amount of time in the Cotswold’s over the two decades of my marriage. We’d stay at the fabulous Lords of the Manor in Upper Slaughter, and then drive to every town and village in the area. I even named our horse farm, Celtic Manor Farm…that’s how much I loved it! This book takes me back in time, and you’ll know why as soon as you dive into the book. It’s Escape to the Country on steroids…. you’ll be planning your next trip, your next home if not an entire redecoration of your current home.

 Happy reading!!
