Blog #15 Expand Your Home Decorating Possibilities – Timeless Paris

Today, I’d love to take you inside one of the ateliers that are highlighted in the book, Timeless Paris by Marin Montagut, who now has a little “shop” inside of Bon Marche. I’ve also included a couple of other “timeless Parisian ateliers.”

I know many of you may not visit Paris any time soon, or maybe even love Paris the way I do, but I have learned that to immerse myself inside something different or totally unaligned with my own decorating style, often brings new ideas, new possibilities to the rooms and homes I’ve created. For example, I always thought I loved light painted rooms, yet my new Boston condo was on a corner of the building and filled with light all day long. Therefore the moody dark blue walls perfectly grounded the light-filled space.

In my Paris apartment, I mixed antique finds with contemporary dining chairs. I had to get out of my comfort bubble to see the possibilities.

Enjoy the view into these very special, family-owned Parisian Ateliers.

FÉAU & CIE

Located in the 17th arrondissement of Paris, this is an unassuming but magical place. From the outside, it appears to be a non-descript street, mostly new unattractive buildings with a few of the old, traditionally French entrances.

Féau Boiseries is one of those entrances. Once inside the door, you’ll walk through rooms and rooms filled with French decorative pieces- beautiful paneling, incredible doors, trumeau mirrors and so much more.

For three generations, the owners have traveled to auction houses and private home sales to accumulate the discarded French décor history often coming out of those beautiful chateaux we love to watch on YouTube as they are being renovated and hired the specialty artisans who can recreate the old.

Check out the Karl Lagerfeld suite in the 2017 redesign of the Hotel de Crillon. Spectacular to say the least. https://feauboiseries.com/karl-lagerfeld-hotel-crillon/

PRELL & CIE

PRELL has been a fabric manufacturer since 1752. Like so many of the French ateliers, it is still a family business with the fifth generation currently at the helm.

Walking up the stairs to the entrance, provides a beautiful almost Princess like beginning to an amazing experience. Before going up the stairs, pretend you have arrived with your house and carriage, stopping at the concierge station.

Absolutely exquisite fabrics, some that have historical pasts and some that are being used in new and fun ways. In my own decorating, I love to mix the old with the new- both are made better when used in combination rather that singularly.

Once you have spent time looking at all the lovely fabrics, look at the rooms. The cabinetry will remind you of days gone by.

This is where decorators can help you. In my early years of decorating, I wasted thousands of dollars in poor purchases and worse design choices. Nothing was transportable to my next home as our family grew. The furniture didn’t last, and I contributed more than I want to admit to the throwaway society. Yes, decorators can be expensive, but if you hold to a budget, the benefits will far outweigh the costs.

So much of interior design is about choices and when faced with the multitude of choices, unless we are trained in design, we’ll become overwhelmed. Then there are the questions of space. As many of us downsize, move to the smaller home or apartment, we have to make rooms multipurpose and the furniture as well as design choices can make that space functional and beautiful at the same time.

The ateliers of Paris, certainly show us how quality can last. Buying quality furniture can be a long-term investment with a history lesson along the way.

I know that my children will most likely never want any of my furniture or my much-loved china place settings when I am gone, so there is something special in knowing that many of the pieces in my homes, were loved by another woman, cherished by another woman, and I am paying forward that love and joy.

Do you like to purchase pre-loved items to enjoy in your home? What are some of your favorite finds?
