Blog #22: We Travel Not to Escape Life, but for Life Not to Escape Us!

It is the time of year that we start making travel plans for the upcoming year.

I’ve decided that I want more experiences. Yes, I’m a Francophile and I love my Paris apartment, but I want more. And that led me to question what is it I really want more of?

More places within France? Is it always about the places? Where else do I want to go? What else do I want to experience?

I was on YouTube and of course, I’m watching snippets of Broadway performances. My gut said YouTube was fine during the pandemic, but Sharri it’s time to be there. I haven’t been to NYC since before covid. Yes, we’ve all heard the city is different, but I have a hunch it’s still a place that concurrently excites and exhausts me.

Ahh, Funny Girl. We’ve all heard about the drama of the Funny Girl female leads on Broadway, but that was a much-loved movie and I care little about behind the scenes drama. I decided I just want to see and hear Lea Michelle belt out the songs I had sung when alone in the family car after finally getting my driver’s license. Don’t Rain on My Parade … so perfect (again) for this stage of my life!

So, click here and there and I had my ticket for the first Friday night performance in January. How perfect! Even though I’m currently a solo, I’m determined there will be NO moping or whining over New Year’s. (Maybe a little wine yes, but no whining!) Because I love Kit Kemp’s hotels in London, I made reservations for one of her NYC hotels, the Whitby. I then booked my Aceola train tickets from Boston to NYC. Boda bing, boda boom and I’ve created my New Year experience.

Stuck sitting in a chair throughout the Thanksgiving weekend, with my crazy boot on while my foot healed, I had time to get quiet and ask what else I wanted to do the first half of 2023. What was I craving? I checked out cooking schools, luxury hotels, cruises, but nothing jazzed me enough to make a reservation. I had to experience a little epiphany and that is that my Paris apartment can be my home base in Europe, but I need to see more. I’m not a tourist who spends her days doing touristy things. Back to that idea that I want more.

So, knowing I’ll be in Paris for the month of February, I’m planning a weekend trip to London. Not sure what play, museum, or library I will visit, but I’ve recognized that I love London just as much as I love Paris. So, back to Kit Kemp’s Number Sixteen Hotel in Kensington and going to at least one play.

Next was a crazy idea that had more lessons for me. I’m a podcaster! Yes, I’m one of those crazy people who has some idea people want to hear what’s going on in my head as well as listen to interesting women chat about the challenges and joys of starting and running your own business.

Well, in May of 2023, there is a huge podcaster event in London called The Podcast Show (thepodcastshowlondon.com). Breakouts, speakers, products, you name it will be in attendance for those two crazy days.

I also have a gardens trip to Provence in April so, I let myself be free to suggest flying to Paris but flying back to Boston from London. Combining a hobby, an interest (beautiful gardens) with a business seminar.

Why is this significant?

#1- Accepting that I’m truly a podcaster and not an imposter who might attend a conference for REAL podcasters is HUGE!! If you have a side business, don’t discount it, or make it small or think it has to fit in with your real life. It is an important part of your current life!

#2- Embracing both my hobbies and my business, could look like what? So many times, I’ve taken on a role in life and let that role become all of me. What could our lives look like if you embraced that you are multi-dimensional with multi-interests, talents, and loves? Suddenly, wanting more isn’t a confusing question!

I invite you to explore how your travel plans, you’re doing plans might (or might not) be honoring all the parts of yourself. You no longer have to be ONE thing! Most of us no longer have kids we are responsible for, they have left the nest!

The days when we were on autopilot, just trying to get everything done are gone. Some of you are solos, and some of you have interests separate from your partners. How can you incorporate all of you, all the interests and places you want to explore?

And yes, it is time for you to travel to wherever you want to go, so that the life you want, the life you dream about, doesn’t escape you.

Where do you want to go? What special trips have you recently taken?
