Blog #21 What’s with All Those Advent Calendars?

Are any of you feeling like we have Advent Calendar overload? I find it so strange that something non-secular with a Christianity basis has now become a part of the retail seasonal products. But I shouldn’t be surprised. We live in a commercialized world and if businesses think they can make money off a product, they will make it and sell it. Black Friday sales are now a worldwide event… even in Paris!

I love these little beauties – even the Advent Calendars that have no presents behind the windows for each date. Remember the old days when Advent calendar just had lots of glitter and little symbols behind each window? You, like me probably couldn’t wait for when it was your day to open the little window.

Well, I have learned through experience, to no longer allow my head to be turned by the incredibly beautiful packaging companies use to lure us in. There are so many options- there are teas, candles, chocolates, perfumes, makeup, or some are specific iconic stores such as Fortum & Mason in London or Bon Marché in Paris. The Advent Calendar has now morphed into a Christmas countdown. If you’re Jewish, not to feel left out, there is a Hanukkah calendar.

So many of the advent calendars these days are beyond beautiful. I love looking at them online and used to hit the “buy now” button faster than I can spell those two words. After spending a good amount of money over several years only to be incredibly disappointed- I’m banning myself from purchasing ANY advent calendars online.

I won’t name names…but many of the teas are old, chocolates are dry, or things behind those little doors that more closely resemble a Mc Donald’s happy meal toy than anything connected to the holiday season.

Has this ever happened to you?? Have you purchased advent calendars in the past?

I promised myself I wouldn’t buy an advent calendar and yet, the Dior advent calendar caught my eye. Of course, it did! It is incredibly beautiful, but when I saw it was $650, the debate in my head was over. I don’t think so, no matter how pretty it is. For $650, I’d maybe consider tea with Christian himself.

The packaging isn’t nearly as fancy as many of the bigger names, but I have a hunch the chocolates will be yummy and much better than my former calendar purchases.
What if you come up with your own way of embracing Advent Calendars in a way that nurtures your dreams, grounds you in the season. What would that be?

 1. One idea might be that you make your own calendar and put in tiny items or quotes or thoughts that could help nourish you though this rather overwhelming season that started today.

For example…

You know when you have the neighborhood party and want to feel confident with a presence.

*Put something in the box for that day that reminds you to be that woman.

Usually, a day or so before a big dinner you’re cooking for, we start to worry whether we’ll have enough food, whether our menu choices will be liked by everyone.

*Those are the days you might need some reminders to breathe and be reminded that any gathering will be more about the conversation than the food.

Maybe you have good friends or family that you can’t be near this holiday season.

*What if those little boxes had reminders to text those people, send them a card or give them a quick phone call to let them know you are thinking about them.

Purchase an empty calendar, even Home Depot sells them! Decorate it as you wish and then add your own little goodies. Maybe your favorite tea, your own little chocolate or nougat, a piece of ribbon you love, the little figures you’ll be adding to your creche as the days move along.

 2. Always buy local. I purchased my advent calendar from my favorite little chocolate shop on rue du Bac in Paris – not a huge chocolate or macaron company that ships thousands of items around the world or sells to the big department stores. Those calendars have been on a shelf for a good while- often long past freshness. At Jean-Paul Hevin, I know their chocolate is freshly made with natural ingredients and real chocolate. Find your local spots and see what they have created.

3.My last crazy idea is what if before you opened the window of each date, you made a wish? Said a little prayer to your higher power? It might provide the kind of mindfulness that brings you back to the present, back to enjoying the holidays with simple intentions.
