Episode 73: Let’s Get Started Manifesting Those Dreams!

As you may or may not know, I live in Paris half the year but the other half of the year, I’m in Boston. Moving back to Boston after three years in Minneapolis took some imagining and visioning. I had so many lists and ideas of what I wanted; especially given I was moving back to a city I loved. Not unlike you and your dream journal.

I’m Sharri Harmel, Chief Creative of the Extraordinary Women Circle and Community, as well as Editor-in-Chief of the Extraordinary Women Magazine. I’ve been a coach for over 20 years and my dream is to create an even bigger platform so that all women can envision and then step into THEIR big dreams.

And we do that inside the EW Circle, which includes the EW magazine, regular live conversations and workshops so you get the clarity you need to create your big dream and help you to stay on track to make it come true.  Thank you for joining me and let’s get started!

Back to my Boston Apartment dream …

I needed a full-service building because I wanted to be able to close the door to my apartment and not worry when I’m in Paris.

I took a direction on my location that I never would have guessed. I ended up in the Seaport neighborhood for lots of reasons, but let’s jump to decorating the apartment because I want you to see how creating my new Boston space very closely relates to you manifesting your dream.

My Boston apartment is a quirky, modern blank vanilla box. It is in a new building. Unlike my former Boston apartment, there wasn’t anything with ANY architectural interest in the apartment. It was a blank space, maybe a lot like your dream possibilities vision board.

Most important, ask yourself what makes your heart sing??

You do start with a blank piece of poster paper both figuratively and literally. When you think about possible dreams…What would you like to be doing … what would you be creating?  Are there specific passions you want to pursue? Most important, ask yourself what makes your heart sing??

Let’s get busy.

I walked from room to room in my apartment and tried to imagine living there, what I’d be doing in each room. As for colors etc., Kit Kemp jumped into my mind. She is one of my current favorite interior designers.  As the head designer for all the hotels she jointly owns with her husband in London and NYC, she uses color in interesting ways. Her rooms are colorful, fun, and over and over, she honors local craftspeople. Kit has the ability to create spaces of curiosity in every room in every corner in her hotels- even inside the elevators. So, if Kit could make an elevator interesting, she was my go-to designer for my vanilla, quirky apartment space.

Be open to all sorts of possibilities and start by letting yourself imagine all possibilities.

See what happened? I accepted that my heart was asking for something unexpected. Then colors jumped into my vision, and I started to see a pathway, with Kit Kemp as a designer.

Same with your dreams. Be open to all sorts of possibilities and start by letting yourself imagine all possibilities. Close your eyes and imagine what you could be doing, imagine where you’ll be doing your work, even what you might be creating. Don’t filter … open your eyes and write down everything that comes to you.

Why are you thinking of doing what it is you want to do?

Next … and at first this might be a very odd question to ask yourself, but ask yourself, why are you thinking of doing what it is you want to do?

That WHY matters … if we’re not 100% vested in what we’re trying to create, it won’t be successful because there’ll be no heart in it. So, your WHY matters. It’s super important. Write YOUR why in the center of your possibilities vision board.  It might be that you combine your love of baking with your WHY, which is to bring healthy, good, daily bread to the people in your neighborhood …suddenly a bakery or a way to get baked breads to people start to take form.

Another passion might be that you love clothes and want to create gorgeous clothes for the plus-size woman because you passionately believe that plus-size women would purchase elegant, well-made, stylish clothes and you are ready to fill that niche.

Two very different passions, two very different dreams, two very  different “Manifesting That Dream” plans.

Now if you’re questioning your WHY, share it with someone you trust. Whatever it is … your face should light up when you talk about what your dream is about. They’ll tell you!

Next, you are ready to build out your vision board.

I knew I wanted something different for my apartment; different from any of my previous colors.  I wanted vibrant colors and I wanted cozy. So, I began by imagining colors, colors that jazzed me, colors that made me happy and I settled on green, deep French blue and corals, bordering on orange!

So, open yourself up when you start to pull images for your vision board. Pictures and ideas maybe draw you in that completely surprise you.  Just let yourself feel your body respond to photos. Someone said the body never lies and that is so true.

You’ve got the vision board. You see all sorts of options but you’re starting to see a solid dream evolve with maybe a few different versions.

Your next task is to assess what you currently have, what you can use or repurpose what you already have.

For my apartment, I looked at my current furniture to see what could repurposed in some way. Could I recover anything? What could be painted a different color? This time, I wanted to purchase very little new, instead use what I had in my vision for my apartment.

When we reinvent ourselves, we don’t throw out everything to start anew.

That’s exactly you! How can you repurpose YOUR skills and strengths?  Start with identifying what you are already good at, and don’t think you only have skills if you had a corporate job. Stay-at-home mothers build loads of skills.  Do a skills and strengths assessment of yourself and make a list. If you are unsure, ask your family and friends. Sometimes it’s hard to see our own strengths but others can perfectly see what we are good at.

Take those strengths you’ve been using and now imagine how you could repurpose those skills. How can you use those skills in your dream plans?

When we reinvent ourselves, we don’t throw out everything to start anew. We build upon all we have learned and done, and head in a different direction.

If you want that bakery, and organization is one of your strengths, you can easily see how that strength is going to be invaluable in your new business venture, right?

Maybe it’s communication skills that are your strength. Won’t those skills be needed to communicate to the world what you are offering and why it is important? Take what you already know and are good at and repurpose it in the vision of your dream.

Next … assess what you don’t know and need to learn.

For me and my apartment, I was unsure what window covering options there were when all the windows are different sizes; at times there is very bright sun and other times very grey.

So, what questions do you have about your dream plan?  What do you need to know more about? What do you need to learn? Is there a class you want to take? Are there people doing what you want to do who would be willing to talk with you?

These are your first action steps that will take you many steps closer to making your dream come alive.

Write down every single question you have and then figure out where you could get answers. These are your first action steps that will take you many steps closer to making your dream come alive.

Ladies … we started today by talking about a vision board. But you have now gone far beyond just creating a vision board. You have made significant inroads to manifesting your dreams by taking all sorts of actions.  So, create that vision board, assess and repurpose your skills and strengths.  List every question you have and begin to explore where you can get the answers and knowledge you need.

Now take a deep breath … YOU are on your way to manifesting YOUR dream!
